Alumnus Visit Chapter MeetingJack Negley '79 Returns to Beta Zeta, Spirit Award Reintroduced

The tradition of the Jack Negley Spirit Award is back, alive and well at Beta Zeta! At the request of Alumni Advisory Board, Jack came back to Purdue and shared his spirited perspective with colony members at a chapter meeting. He told stories, philosophies and lessons from his time at Purdue. The colony members really enjoyed meeting and hearing from Jack!

As most of you know, Beta Zeta created the Jack D. Negley Spirit Award in the early 1980s, soon after he graduated. Jack contributed a lot to the chapter in the late 70s, helping it emerge from a weaker period of our history in the aftermath of the Vietnam war. In particular, Jack’s fun-loving, magnetic personality and drive were critical in helping Beta Zeta improve in rush and social standing on campus.

While at Purdue recently, Jack talked with the colony members about:

- Networking and making friends with everyone you can on campus — sorority girls, potential rushees…

- Showing a personal interest in, and bonding with, every brother and pledge and the true meaning of “brotherhood”

- Balancing Sigma Nu and fun with hard work and academics

- Targeting areas of the chapter to improve. Making chapter goals and driving to achieve those goals

- Graduating in four years, which he did in industrial engineering. Jack shared his own experience of paying for his own education (including two summers in a row working two full-time jobs at the same time, working K-crew at Sigma Nu…)

- Using his Sigma Nu network to learn about technical sales as a career and to find his job when he graduated

The colony members loved Jack’s stories. He talked about his disco mirror ball, which he hung in his room with a flashlight focused on it. He also let the chapter use the ball and light for dances. He also talked about how he used his network to frequently set up brothers (and pledges) with dates for dances.

Jack left the guys with the following thought — Embrace the college experience and carry the “spirit” of Sigma Nu with you!
