Three deserving Beta Zeta Colony Members Each Receive $1,000

At a recent chapter meeting three $1,000 scholarships were awarded to Beta Zeta Colony members.  Receiving scholarships were:

Eric Eagon-a sophomore majoring in Aerospace Engineering. Eric is from Kirkwood, MO, is treasurer of the colony, is starting defensemen on Purdue’s top Hockey team, and has a 3.76 cumulative GPA (Purdue is now on a 4 point scale).

Aaron Fischer- a sophomore majoring in Electrical Engineering Technology/Computer Science. Aaron is from Lebanon, IN, is Public & Alumni Relations chair of the colony and had a 3.76 GPA last semester bringing his cumulative GPA up to 3.39.  Aaron is also on the Purdue Hyperloop team that is one of 30 teams selected worldwide to compete in the 2018 SpaceX competition.

Anders Hovstadius-a freshman majoring in pre-med/public health. Anders is from Westport, CT, is recorder of the colony and had a very impressive 3.88 his first semester at Purdue. Anders also volunteers his time educating middle school students in math, science and technology. He expects this scholarship to help him do more of that in place of some of the hours he otherwise would have had to work to pay for his education.

We are very excited to offer this program to help Beta Zeta recruit and retain men who demonstrate strong values and performance.  Several of Beta Zeta’s most loyal and dedicated alumni teamed up to fund and create the program. It all started with Chuck and Annette Ludwig’s (BZ 1066) vision and very generous $5,000 donation. Then, several more alumni came forward and gave generous donations to add to the fund.  To be eligible a Purdue Beta Zeta colony member had to have above a 3.25 GPA. In addition to academic performance, part of the criteria for receiving scholarship money was that the applicant must also demonstrate:

-Commitment to Sigma Nu’s values of Love, Truth and Honor

-High character and personal purpose

-Leadership behaviors in Beta Zeta and in other campus activities

We expect scholarships to be awarded on an ongoing basis, and now have the funding to do so for a few years. We are considering ways to seek additional donations for the fund from other Beta Zeta alumni, so we have the funding to potentially increase the level of awards given and to continue to offer the scholarship over the long term. Stay tuned for more on this in the future.
